German is the most widely spoken native language in EU countries (170-185 million speakers worldwide). It has been taught at the grammar school since its foundation, with students divided into groups ranging from beginners to advanced learners.

In years 1 and 2, students learn the foundations of the language, learn to talk in the present and past tenses about everyday topics (family, friends, leisure time), and reach A2 level (Berliner Platz Neu 1-2 textbooks). In years 3 and 4, they work with Berliner Platz Neu 3-4, master the future tense, the subjunctive and more demanding topics (intercultural society, media, the environment), and recognise the varieties of German used in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
