Alongside English, Czech language and literature is a core subject at our grammar school. Its main aim is to help students improve their command of standard Czech and develop polished spoken and written expression. As Karel Čapek said, “language is the very soul and culture of a nation.”

The four weekly lessons are divided into 3 hours of literature and stylistics and 1 hour of grammar. In the fourth year, teaching consists of 4 hours of literature and stylistics and a school-leaving examination seminar.

Literature lessons focus on literary history, text comprehension, literary interpretation and characterisation, reading literacy and developing expression. Stylistics, students’ own writing and quarterly composition assignments are an integral part of the subject. Teaching strengthens connections with other subjects (history, social sciences, art and Culture 21).
