Area Studies
Back to subjectsAs part of Amazon’s continued excellence in the study of English and English-speaking countries, all third-year students take an Area Studies class, focusing on the United States and Canada. Learning about countries around the world increases students’ ability to become contributing members of society - not only in their own country, but throughout the world.
Students begin with a brief history of the United States, its founding, and its government. From there we study the five regions of the United States individually, which lets us later compare and contrast them with one another and with other countries. The final part of the class focuses on Canada, with special attention to its political system and small but diverse population.
Examples of our topics of study
- History of Native Americans in North America
- United States and Canadian government and politics
- Human–environment interactions
- Physical geography of the U.S. and Canada
- Cultural patterns and differences
- Political divisions and elections
We employ classroom discussions, projects, presentations, and real-life examples from teachers native to these countries. The course gives students a greater understanding of the USA and Canada, along with the vocabulary and skills needed to discuss geography and related topics in English.
